Introduction

“Night Waitress”  As a night shift waitress floats through the days and nights of her life, her thoughts provide insight into the loneliness that can be experienced even in a room full of people.

“Counting in Chinese”  Feelings of loss and nostalgia for the smells, sights, sounds, and memories of a former life drive the narrator into a state of restlessness that is calmed only by counting aloud in Chinese.
