Our Contests

The Missouri Review holds two annual contests, the Jeffrey E. Smith Editors' Prize in Fiction, Essay and Poetry, and our recently instituted Audio Competition.

Jeffrey E. Smith Editors' Prize

Now in its 20th year, the Jeffrey E. Smith Editors' Prize awards over $15,000 annually in Fiction, Poetry, and Nonfiction.  But that's not all: winners are featured in the spring issue of The Missouri Review and flown to Columbia (MO!) for a gala reading and reception.  Three runners-up in each category receive cash prizes and are considered for publication. Early Submission Bonus: Submit your entry between June 1st and June 30th, and receive a free 5th issue on the 4-issue subscription you receive as part of your entry fee.

Now accepting entries in Voice-Only Lit and Video Documentary

Winners receive a total of $4,500 in prizes.

First prize in each category receives $1,500, second prize $500. Five entries from both categories will be selected for a $100 Editor's Prize. All entrants receive a 1-year subscription to The Missouri Review’s Print or Digital Edition. Entries in both categories will be considered for publication in The Missouri Review or on our website.
