Jeffrey E. Smith Editors’ Prize Contest Winners

December 28th, 2007 by Kris · 2 Comments

On behalf of this year’s Editors’ Prize contest coordinators Jessica Garratt, Stephanie Carpenter and Darren Pine, we would like to thank everyone who entered this year. The quality of entries in all genres was exceptional, making reading fun but deciding on winners and finalists daunting. Around the office, we had many discussions about and re-readings of entries before we made our final decisions. Here are the winners and finalists for 2007:

Fiction
Winner: Otis Haschemeyer, Knoxville, TN, “The Fantome of Fatma”
Finalists:
Anna Solomon, Brooklyn, New York, “The Lobster Mafia Story”
Cynthia Morrison Phoel, Newton Highlands, MA, “Never Trust a Man Who . . .”
Natalie Sears, New York, NY, “Arctic Summer”

Poetry
Winner: Jude Nutter, Edina, MN
Finalists:
Christina Hutchins, Albany, CA
Paisley Rekdal, Salt Lake City, UT
Scott Coffel, Iowa City, IA

Nonfiction
Winner: Robert Kimber, Temple, ME, “Big Jim”
Finalists:
Anne Meisenzahl, Tallahassee, FL, “Thank You and Good-bye:
A Meditation on My Breasts”
Elizabeth Logan Harris, New York, NY, “How Come?”
John Stazinksi, Cambridge, MA, “Lesson in Amateur Stalking”

Happy holidays to all our entrants. It was a tough competition this year, and we’d like to thank everyone who submitted their work to our judges.

Keep checking in with us. We will start accepting submissions for next year’s Jeffrey E. Smith Editors’ Prize contest and our new Audio Contest soon.
