Today, we are delighted to share with you “Inheritance” by Mandi Jourdan, one of the winning audio projects from this year’s Miller Audio Contest. The Miller Audio Contest, judged this year by Cher Vincent, is open to artists composing in the genres of Prose, Audio Documentary, Humor and Poetry. Jourdan‘s “Inheritance” was selected by Vincent as the 2019 Winner in the Prose category. Read what Jourdan has to say about “Inheritance” and listen to her winning piece below.

About “Inheritance”:
“Inheritance” is set in the same universe as my novels Lacrimosa and Veritas and my podcast, Shadows of the Mind, though it takes place more than a decade after that part of the story. Cissa’s father Eddie is one of the central characters in the main timeline, as is her mother Desdemona (“Desi”), whom I voice in the podcast. I’d wanted to explore these characters’ future after the series for a long time, and I wrote “Inheritance” as a flash piece to do so. As I was turning the first novel into a season of the podcast, I worked with some of my writer friends, who act in Shadows of the Mind, to produce “Inheritance” in audio format. I want to thank them for their hard work in helping me bring these characters to life and to thank Professor Pinckney Benedict for teaching me how to edit audio and encouraging me to submit to the Miller Audio Prize. I also want to thank the Missouri Review and judge Cher Vincent for this amazing opportunity.
