E. P. Howell
Elijah Preston Howell, a circuit clerk of Gentry County, resigned his position to make the trip from Athens, Missouri to head for the gold mines of California in 1849 with his family. His personal account of the trip in its entirety is in the State Historical Society of Missouri .
