I just finished reading a book that I recommend to all poets, The Resistance to Poetry by James Longenbach. A poet himself, the book is dense, brief, and wonderfully written. His thesis, that what makes poetry so powerful is the way in which it resists itself, is compelling. And his close readings of contemporary poetry are some of the best I’ve encountered.
